It’s Just Not Good Enough!
When are the judiciary going to take animal cruelty seriously?
Some horrific acts of cruelty have happened to animals recently, and the penalties for the perpetrators have been laughable. Cam Macdonald at Gatton has had enough and started a petition to the Qld Government. This project has the support of the RSPCA, Local MPs and of course the Qld Horse Council. Please download and sign the Animal Cruelty Petition – put it in your local produce, Saddlery, anywhere there are animal lovers. Though the content in this petition refers to specific horse cases it covers the whole animal world. Do something for our voiceless friends!!!!!!!!!!
Hendra Virus Vaccine
With the exciting news that the Hendra Vaccine is a magnificent success, we now have the wait until it becomes a commercial reality. This is not automatic! While the project has received overwhelming support from horse owners, many horse organisations still haven’t written their letters of support to the Qld Horse Council or the AHIC. This must happen! If you are a member of a club, no matter how small, or if it is part of a larger umbrella organisation, write a letter of support from that club and lobby the larger breed and sport associations to do the same. There is work to be done and funds will be needed, so don’t forget the Hendra Virus Horse Vaccine Development Fund.
Meanwhile we have to stay safe so look at the Qld Horse Council Fact Sheets!

Biosecurity Bill – Change is on the way
Major changes to legislation and the elimination of the outdated stock act are on their way. The horse industry needs to rethink the way that we operate and contribute to get the best outcome for the horse industry without compromising biosecurity, or the health of our horses and other livestock. If anybody wants to come on board the QHC team that’s dealing with issues like crossing ticklines contact Debbie Dekker at president@qldhorsecouncil.com

Horse Health Issues
After all the rain, breeding insects and the abundance of grass there are some health issues that will and are occurring. Watch out for laminitis, and shutting them in yards or stables for a good period of the day may necessary. Ross River fever or an insect borne virus is also a possibility. EIA is a serious notifiable disease that is endemic to certain parts of Qld and very rarely moves out of these regions, but it is spread by insects that thrive in flood areas and has occasionally occurred in other parts of Qld. Please read our EIA fact sheet

Road Safety is no accident!
Safety on the road encompasses a large range of issues from riding or driving your horse on the road, the transport of your horses in vehicles designed for them, to the education of drivers that have no knowledge of horses. As part of the horse community it is our job to behave responsibly and politely, to educate ourselves on correct procedures and the laws that govern safety, and also to pass on information to those outside the horse world on what is correct. The consequences to everybody when safety is ignored or not understood can be enormous. Whether mistakes are made through ignorance or arrogance matters very little when an avoidable tragedy has occurred.
